Field Choice Project

Select one of the following projects:

1.) Create and implement a primary grade level learning center you will use to teach about a social studies concept.

What objective(s) will the learning center have? How could you modify its activities to provide for the diverse abilities found in a classroom, for example, for a student with limited vision, a student whose first language is not English, and a student reading well above grade level? Submit a description of the center, photographs of students using the center and a reflection/analysis.

2.) Design and use with children a small group game that reviews information about the production and distribution process of a warm winter coat or some other consumer good with which younger children may be familiar. Submit photographs of children playing the game and a reflection/analysis.

3.) Attend an ethnic or cultural celebration. Take part in, and observe, the events and people. Record how you felt at this event. Include pleasant feelings and experiences as well as any negative responses or you had. What did you learn about the ethnic group? What is something you learned that you might incorporate into your teaching that would help others learn more about this group and who they are? Submit easily viewed photographs/powerpoint and a 2 page single-spaced 12 pt. paper.

4.) Identify and examine six character education Internet websites (3 sites for K-3 and 3 sites for 4 – 6 grade levels). Using a spreadsheet, describe the following: major types of materials on each website, sponsorship of the site, user focus – teachers, students, parents, or a combination of one or more. Next, using poster board, create a drawing of a classroom (either primary or intermediate) that emphasizes character education. (2 students can choose this topic)

5.) View a video or film that attempts to teach children about people who live in a region or nation of the world. Write a 1 -2 page single-spaced, 12 pt. evaluation of the film in which you identify which of the five themes of geography or PDE Standards are presented to the students; explain why you think the film would be successful or unsuccessful in presenting geographic knowledge and motivating students to want to learn about the region. Create a travel brochure (either paper or electronic) that highlights the region in the film. Share video/film in class.
